Kill Ubuntu’s new notification popups

I’m sure that many people love Ubuntu’s new-ish notification system.  You know, the Growl-like popups that tell you that your network is offline every time your laptop wakes from sleep?  Me, I’m not one of them.

Here’s a quick tip on how to disable it:

Open a terminal,

sudo chmod -x /usr/lib/notify-osd/notify-osd

pkill notify-osd

Note that I’d expect new versions of notify-osd to “fix” the permissions on this file, so you might have to do this from time to time.  However, between patches it will bring you some relief.  Also note that disabling notify-osd also appears to interfere with the netbook-remix launcher.  Pity.
